One of my all-time favorite makes in 2023 was this Mushroom Granny Sqaure pillow! It was so easy to work up, only taking me about 15 minutes per square to make.
It is made entirely of single crochet stitches, and while it doesn’t follow the technique of a typical granny square, I like to think that any square meant to be sewn together in the end is a granny square! Crochet has NO RULES in my mind! Plus it’s a really cute pillow.
ABOUT THIS PATTERN:
- Level: Easy- uses basic stitches, and repetitive patterns.
- Written in US Crochet terms.
- Finished square should measure about 4.5 x 4.5 inches, but could be larger if you block it or have a loose tension.
- This mushroom granny square tutorial is available on YOUTUBE or you can purchase the whole PDF pattern here.
In this YouTube Video, I show you exactly how I made one of these mushroom granny squares, and I also give you tips for carrying your yarn colors under your working stitches, as well as how to tie in your ends when you’re finished!
FOR THIS PATTERN YOU WILL NEED:
- 5.5mm crochet hook – my favorite brand.
- ANY 3 colors of size 4.medium acrylic yarn. I used I LOVE THIS YARN brand.
- Colors I used: #260 Light Sage, #152 Terra Cotta, and #240 Linen.
- Yarn needle/smaller crochet hook to weave in ends.
- Scissors for cutting yarn tails.
- Yarn needle for sewing squares together.
To create this pillow, I sewed 16 mushroom squares together, and using a single crochet stitch and the Terra Cotta and Linen yarn colors, made a checkered pattern that was the same size as the mushroom squares sewn together! I sewed 3 of the 4 sides together, leaving an opening to shove in the pillow insert.
I used an 18 inch pillow insert, and once it was inside the half-sewn cover, I finished up sewing the last side closed with a single crochet stitch. All of this in detailed in the PDF.
