This Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is so easy to make, and the end result is stunning! You really can take a simple stitch (the half-double crochet) and make a flawless & beautiful heirloom quality blanket that will last a lifetime to be passed down for generations.
I used a medium acrylic yarn to complete this pattern, but you can use ANY size yarn and yarn material to make this blanket because it is made with one single stitch.
So make it bulky and warm with a 6+ weight yarn or make it light and flowy with anything smaller than a 4.
The size is so easy to figure out, and you can follow along with my stitch sample of the Letter B on YoutTube if you want to know how large/small your letter will turn!
I made this blanket for my nephew, and I can’t wait to gift it to him! Let’s get into how it’s made…
SUPPLIES:
- 5.0mm crochet hook, or any coordinating hook to your yarn size.
- 2 colors of your favorite yarn. I recommend Loop & Threads Soft Classic Acrylic Yarn in the color Leaf Green for the Main Blanket, and the color Mushroom for the Letter.
- You will also need a yarn needle and scissors to weave in yarn tails and finish you blanket.
- Gauge: 13 stitches x 14 rows = 4x4inch square
- Calculate yarn amount: 4x4inch = 12.5 grams of yarn.
- Each Initial (letter) will use about 4.5 grams of yarn.
- Level: Easy. Uses a US Half-double crochet stitch with some color changing.
- Stitch Key: ch- chain, hdc- half-double crochet, yo- yarn over, st- stitch
- HDC (under all 3 loops) Stitch Instructions: yo, insert hook under all 3 loops, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
- View the stitch tutorial on Youtube.
WRITTEN PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS:
Stitch Key: ch- chain, hdc- half double crochet, yo- yarn over, st- stitch
For this pattern, we will be stitching a hdc under all 3 loops:
To start: With your main color yarn, ch any amount. (This will be the width of your blanket, so chain accordingly). You must chain more than 12 in order to incorporate a letter into the bottom right corner.
Row 1: hdc into the 2nd chain from your hook (yo, insert hook into chain, pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 3 loops on your hook). Then hdc into every chain until the end. Turn
Row 2: hdc into the first stitch under all 3 loops, and then hdc into every st under all 3 loops to the end. (there is no turning chain). Turn (from here on, remember to hdc under all 3 loops, as it will not be stated again).
Row 3: hdc into every stitch down the row (same as row 2).
Row 4: You will need to follow the letter graph to your chosen letter for rows 4-17.
If you are right-handed, you will start from the right side of your graph at row 4.
If you are left-handed, you will crochet down the row until you have 12 stitches left, then follow your graph from the left side at row 4.
Row 18-end: Hdc into every stitch in each row, for as many rows as you need until you reach your desired blanket length.
Once you are finished with your blanket, weave in any yarn tails and the wash/dry according to your yarn package instructions. You can also block your blanket if the ends are curling up.
Graph Example:
To better understand how to follow the graph and complete rows 4-17, please view the YouTube video. You can start the video at 9:25 once you complete rows 1-3.
