It’s officially National Hobbit Day (Frodo and Bilbo Baggins Birthday’s!) and what better way to celebrate than with a new cozy crochet pattern! Kick off your shoes, grab your favorite yarn, and lots of snacks of course, and come crochet a Hobbit Hole with me!
I originally designed this hobbit hole crochet pattern to be a book sleeve that I made for my friend’s birthday! But it could be used for so much more than that! I designed a second hobbit hole cross-body style purse that I think would be so cute to wear to a renaissance faire or even just the farmers market or your next trip to the grocery store!
Other ideas I figured this pattern could be used for are: kindle sleeve, laptop/ipad sleeve, notebook cover, and phone pouch! I’m sure you guys could come up with WAY more uses for it though, so definitely let me know what you’d make!
ABOUT THIS PATTERN
- Level: Intermediate- includes color work and shaping.
- Stitch key: (U.S.) ch- chain, sc- single crochet, sl-st- slip stitch, dc- double crochet, Yo- yarn over.
- This is a written/photo tutorial style pattern.
SUPPLIES
- 3.5mm crochet hook- used for the whole pattern.
- Size 4/medium/worsted weight acrylic yarn. Any colors/brand is ok. I used a mix of Red Heart, I Love This Yarn, and Big Twist. These are all affordable budget firendly yarn brands found in store and online.
- Yarn needle used for creating a “french knot” in the center of each flower. Metal or Plastic is ok.
- Hot glue (optional) for attaching each applique to the pouch. Or you can use a yarn needle and coordinating yarn to sew them on, instead. Fabric glue may work too.

Step 1: The Pouch
Use any yarn color- I chose to use green in both of my pattern examples.
To Start: Chain any amount (this will be the width of the pouch, so chain the amount needed to match your desired width) I recommend a chain longer than 5inches/12.7cm so the door applique fits onto it without going over the sides.
2. Sc into the 2nd ch from hook, then sc into every ch down to the end. (I recommend putting a stitch marker into the first sc stitch you made to mark it for the next steps).
3. Sc one more into the last chain space (this ch space should have 2 sc stitches in it)
4. Sc into the bottom of every chain going back in the opposite direction toward the stitch marker.
5. Remove the stitch marker from your first stitch, and sc into that first stitch space. Place the stitch marker back into that stitch. (this is to mark the first stitch of each round, but it’s optional).
6. repeat: Sc into every stitch around. For as many rounds until you’ve made your pouch tall enough to your liking. (I recommend making it taller than 5 inches/12.7cm.)
7. Once your pouch is the length you like, you will slip stitch into the next stitch space, cut your yarn, and pull the tail through the loop of your slip stitch, to tie off.
8. Weave in your tails and cut off.

Step 2: The Brick Door
Colors needed for this step: red and gray yarn for the brick, and any color of choice for the door.
This circle is adapted from the tutorial by Massive Crochet on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wENzhMHl8LM?si=hrIdPvVUj3JWIFlT

Once You’re finished with the brick border around your circle door, you can tie the yarn tails together on the back, and cut them short. They will be hidden once they’re attached to the pouch!

Step 3: The Doorknob
Click here for a tutorial on: How To Make A Magic Circle
To start: with any yarn color (I chose a gold color), make a magic circle.
2. ch 2
3. dc into the circle.
4. dc 10 more into the circle (11 total + ch 2)
5. Pull magic circle tail gently to tighten and close the circle.
6. sl-st into the first dc (not ch 2). Cut and tie off.

Step 4: The Flowers & Vines
Use as many colors as you’d like for this step!
The photo tutorial below is for 1 flower. Make as many flowers as you will need!
This flower tutorial is adapted from the pattern by Joanna Martinez on YouTube: https://youtu.be/cUPV8EVCgPQ?si=xBP_U_w2O5LA3jqD

The Vines

Step 5: Assembly
For this step, make sure all yarn tails are tied into knots and cut short.
1. Before gluing anything (or sewing it) to the pouch, make sure you have an idea of how you want the layout.

2. I am going to use hot glue to attach everything to the pouch. Start by gluing the door to the center of the pouch.
3. Next, glut the door knob to the center of the door piece.
4. Glue the vines around the door next, before adding flowers.
5. Last, glue the flowers onto the pouch in any arrangement that you’d like.

Step 5: Assembly continued…

This is a popular embroidery stitch that we will make with yarn.

Step 6: The Strap (optional)
This step is completely optional- but if you’re wanting to make a purse and need an idea for how you can add a strap, keep reading!
You can use any yarn color for this!

14. Attach end of strap to the other side of your pouch by slip stitching into the two stitches on that side of the pouch. Then cut yarn and pull through loop on hook to tie off. Weave in yarn tails!
I made my strap about 20 inches long.
I wanted to make a long, cross body bag, with my hobbit hole pouch.
You can purchase a canvas zipper pouch to fit inside of your bag if you’re worried about it not being lined. You’ll keep your items safe and still have a functional crochet bag!

AND YOU’RE DONE!
Thank you much for spending this Hobbit Day with me, and I hope you all have a cozy rest of your week.
Happy Crocheting!
